Kandy to Ella: Train or Private Driver?

A balanced guide to choosing the Kandy–Ella train, a private driver, or a combination of both for a comfortable hill-country journey.

Scenic train travelling through Sri Lanka hill country near Ella

The Kandy–Ella route is popular because it passes tea country, mountain views and small hill towns. The best way to travel depends on what you value most: the train experience, flexibility, comfort with luggage, or a mixture of all three.

Taking the train

The train is an experience in its own right. It can be a memorable way to see the landscape and offers a slower, sociable travel day. Bookings, seat availability and operating conditions should be checked well in advance, particularly in busy periods.

Advantages

  • A distinctive scenic experience through the hills.
  • A chance to enjoy the journey without watching the road.
  • A good choice when the train ride is one of your trip priorities.

Considerations

Stations, platforms and carriages can be less convenient with large luggage, young children or limited mobility. Weather and service conditions can affect the day, and the train does not allow detours for viewpoints, meals or attractions. It is worth planning transfers at both ends.

Travelling with a private driver

A private driver gives you control over departure time, luggage and stops. You can break the route with viewpoints, tea-country visits or a relaxed lunch, and continue directly to your hotel. This is often simpler for families, older travellers and groups carrying several bags.

It is not automatically the better choice: it simply suits travellers who want flexibility or find the train logistics less appealing.

Combine the two

Many visitors choose a practical middle ground. A private driver can take you to the station, look after the wider itinerary and collect you after the train journey. That way, the scenic rail experience is part of the trip without needing to arrange every connection independently.

How to choose

Choose the train if the rail journey itself matters most and you are happy to plan around it. Choose a private driver if your group needs direct travel, flexible stops or easier luggage handling.
