Travellers enjoying Sri Lanka hill country with their private chauffeur

This 10-day route is a starting point, not a fixed package. It gives first-time visitors a sensible flow from arrival through culture and hill country to wildlife and the coast, with a private driver helping to keep the travel days manageable.

Who this itinerary suits

It works well for couples, families and small groups who want variety without changing hotels every night. Adjust the number of nights, sightseeing stops and driving pace to suit your interests and flight times.

Sample 10-day route

Day 1 — Airport / Negombo

Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport and rest near the airport in Negombo, especially after a long flight or late arrival.

Days 2–3 — Sigiriya and the Cultural Triangle

Travel to Sigiriya and use it as a base for the Cultural Triangle. Keep one day for the rock fortress or nearby cultural visits and another for a slower pace, wildlife or a hotel break.

Days 4–5 — Kandy

Continue to Kandy, with time to settle in rather than rushing through on arrival day. A second day allows for the city, gardens, a cultural visit or a relaxed lakeside evening.

Day 6 — Nuwara Eliya / hill country

Take the scenic route into the hills. Cooler temperatures and tea-country scenery make this a useful transition between Kandy and Ella.

Day 7 — Ella

Spend time in Ella for viewpoints, short walks and an unhurried hill-country stay. If the train journey is important to you, read our guide to Kandy to Ella: train or private driver? and combine the two.

Day 8 — Yala

Head towards Yala or another suitable wildlife area, allowing time for an afternoon or following-morning safari according to your plan.

Day 9 — South coast

Continue to the coast for a slower day in Mirissa, Galle or another beach base. The right choice depends on whether you prefer beaches, restaurants, heritage or simply rest.

Day 10 — Colombo / airport

Travel towards Colombo or the airport, building in time that suits your departure flight. Avoid leaving a long cross-island journey too close to check-in.

Why a private driver can help

Several of these legs involve changing terrain and hotel locations. A private driver lets you stop for meals, comfort breaks and views while keeping luggage with you. It also gives you a practical way to adapt the plan if weather, energy levels or a favourite place calls for more time.

Route variations

Beach lovers can add nights on the south coast. Families may reduce hotel changes or choose shorter daily drives. Those arriving late can begin with an extra night in Negombo. If you have more time, add a second wildlife stop or a longer beach extension.
